Sometimes, a pub comes so close to perfection as to invoke a little sigh of appreciation from all who enter. The Duke of York is one of those places.
Nestled delightfully in a residential-ish part of St Werburghs, the pub is a lovely brisk walk from the city centre to sit down for a well-deserved pint of nut-brown ale and a conversation with a local bearded self-sufficient farmer about the rising price of pig feed.
The front of the room is kitsch heaven, with twinkling fairy lights and walls heavy with trinkets, whilst the back houses a full-size, free-to-use skittles alley. The outdoor seating area ? once a rather depressing slab of fag-covered concrete ? has been transformed by a rather pleasing wood ?n? canvas arrangement.
The drinks are just superb, with many local ciders on tap, and all at keen-as-mustard prices. If there?s a bad word to be said about the grand old Duke, it?d have to be that the recent upstairs
