The Old Duke
45 King Street , BS1 4ER, Bristol
Ask any rollee-smokin, foot-tappin, beret-wearin jazz fiend in Bristol where to go out and they'll answer back with ?the Old Duke? so fast that you?ll think they?re some sort of a physic race of people who deserve our loving respect and utter adoration.
Maybe this is going to far, but The Old Duke is undoubtedly a fun place to go for a beer - it's always full of eager, music loving drinkers and entry is free.
Most of the acts are non-professional, but that's not taking anything away from the quality of the music played ? most is very good by most people?s standards, and the place certainly has the best open-mic night in the city.
During the latter, you might see anything from wino jazz-saxophonists pushing out long, druggy solos to fresh-faced music tech students playing their tin-whistles through vintage Moog synths. The drinks aren't great or especially cheap, but the booze isn?t why you come here.
